News Room

Editor

It’s hard to believe I’ve been in the newspaper business almost my whole life. I’ve been the editor of the Star and Times, off and on, since 1999 – this after stops in Saskatoon, Dauphin, Prince Albert and Humboldt. Since moving here I got married, had a child, and became more community minded, playing senior hockey, recreation softball and joining the Kinsmen Club. We’re quite proud of the newspaper we’ve put together here in the Valley, but we always know there’s room for improvement. Feel free to contact me with any story ideas or suggestions.

Really, I started in the spring of 2006. It honestly feels like I just arrived for my first day of work.

I suppose it seems that way since there’s always something new for me to attend. That’s what I like about living in the Valley, all the people and all the new adventures.

So, I suppose I’ll see you around. Let me know if you have any stories to share at reporter@starandtimes.ca.

After all, if you don’t share your stories, what do we have to write about?

Feature Reporter

Jim Mullett

There is an irony in the fact that I am now working in the newspaper business. I spent most of my adult life as a counselor and supervisor with the Manitoba Departments of Justice and Family Services where I saw the media as the enemy who never “gets it right.”

Now after a few years of working off and on for newspapers in the Maritimes and Manitoba I realize that reporting and writing the news looks a lot easier from the outside-looking-in.

My wife and I have been in the Swan River area for two years now where I am semi-retired and writing for the Star and Times on a part-time-basis. I rarely cover hard news these days. My preference is for the longer feature which appears weekly on the Your Community page of the paper.

I work out of my home office so if you have any story ideas for me you can pass them on to the Editor.

Reporter

Nearly two years have passed since I began working with the Star & Times team, and my experiences have been as varied and unique as the individuals who make up the Valley.

Through covering stories and events I have come to know and respect many members of the community. Each new encounter brings a deeper understanding and appreciation for my new home. It’s true, times flies when you’re having fun.

Although we do our best to source out stories we’re always looking for new ideas. Just call or drop a line to the editor with your suggestions.

Hi! My name is Kate Blythe and for those of you who don’t know me I’m quite new to the Valley having lived here for two years. I just recently got the chance to work with the team at the Star & Times and since I’ve always been very interested in writing and photography that makes this a dream job for me!

I lived in Kitchener Ontario until I was 15 before moving out to southern Manitoba.  Since then I have slowly moved my way up north along with my family, but I don’t think I will be moving any further northbound seeing that I hate the cold! I was however blown away at the warm welcome that we got from the community; never have I lived in a community where outsiders are so welcomed.

At heart I’m a country girl who loves the outdoors. My interests and hobbies range from movies to music to books, and the list could go on and on. I’m thankful for this job opportunity and I’m very proud to be working at the Star & Times.
